1931 Built Lime Mortar Repoint

Built in 1931 this wonderful house was designed by Herbert Collins whom was a British architect, born in Edmonton, London. He designed many of the suburban developments in the city of Southampton in the 1920s and 1930s.

The house was originally built with lime mortar but over the years the front had sadly been repointed using a mix match of cements and the wrong style of pointing. Conservation guidelines have now been put in place so this doesn't happen again.

The work involved meant all the hard cement mortar had to be skillfully removed using a grinder. This was done in a way so no damage would be caused to the brickwork. Once the cement was removed the joints were further racked back to the correct depth and a firm base found for the new mortar to adhere to.

Before repointing time was also taken to remove any unsightly leftover cement from the brick faces and edges. When it came to repointing the final finish of the mortar had to adhere to the set Conservation guidelines.

This was a lovely building to be trusted to work on and bring back to its former glory. The house owner was delighted and kindly wrote me a lovely review.

Having moved into a period house and contemplated the enormity of the work to be completed I started the process to consider in which order I would renovate the house. I decided fundamentals like roof, damp and brickwork were vital at the early stages to ensure the house remained sound.

I found Build Bright, Dave from a google search along with a couple of other contractors who specialized in replacing lime pointing.

Dave was immediately responsive, and visited the house within a few days of my call to him, It was clear at the start he knew exactly what the house needed as a previous owner had repointed using a concrete mix that had also spread across the brickwork, it looks shabby (but not chic).

Dave completed the work on the front of my house in around 5 weeks from start to finish, weather permitting. The work was continually under the scrutiny of the local conservation committee as it progressed, which did not give Dave any cause for concern as the job he was doing was to replace in the way it should have been from the start.

The job was completed and I can honestly say, I have never seen such a transformation of a house, it is absolutely fantastic and most definitely exceeded my expectations. The conservation committee have also endorsed the work that has been completed, they have suggested it is used as an example to other residents in the conservation estate.

I have no hesitation in recommending the work of Build Bright, he completed, on time, in budget and the results were far above my own expectation, I cant thank him enough.

Dave did a great job repointing and repairing a section of our 1850s brick and flint cottage. From the outset he was diligent and professional. He gave us an honest quote, advising on where work was needed and where it was not. The final product was exactly what we hoped for with the colour and texture of his lime mortar carefully integrated into the original work. He will be our first choice for any future repairs.
